See Your Security Through Microsoft’s Eyes

Do you know your Microsoft Secure Score?

If your firm uses Microsoft 365, Microsoft already provides a Secure Score that gives you a view of your current security and recommends ways to improve it.

You don’t need to be an IT expert to start.

Check your score. See what Microsoft recommends.

And if you’re not sure what the recommendations mean or what to do next, we can help.

What Is Microsoft Secure Score?

Microsoft Secure Score is a measurement your organization’s security posture. It looks at key areas of your Microsoft environment and recommends actions for improving your security.

Think of the score as a starting point, not a pass or fail.

Microsoft continually updates its security recommendations and scoring as its products and security practices evolve. Your environment changes too. That means checking your Secure Score shouldn’t be a one-time exercise.

Check it periodically. See what has changed. Review what Microsoft recommends.

One Score. Different Parts of Your Security.

Your overall Secure Score is made up of different areas of your Microsoft environment:

Identity

How you control who can access your systems and under what circumstances.

Devices

How computers and other devices connecting to your environment are protected.

Apps

Security across email, Microsoft 365, and other applications.

Data

How your firm’s information is protected.

You can be doing very well in one area and have significant room for improvement in another.

That’s why the number itself only tells part of the story. Take a look at the individual areas and the recommendations Microsoft provides.

Your Microsoft Licensing Matters Too

Microsoft 365 subscriptions include different security capabilities.

Secure Score can show you a current license score based on your existing Microsoft licenses and recommendations that may require additional capabilities.

For many firms, the first question shouldn’t be, “What else do we need to buy?”

It should be, “Are we making good use of the security capabilities we already have?”

Why Many RIAs Have Low Secure Scores

When we begin working with an RIA, it’s common to see a Microsoft Secure Score in the 30s. After onboarding and properly configuring the Microsoft environment, our clients are typically above 65.
Often, the difference isn’t one major security problem. It’s a collection of things that haven’t been configured, aren’t being used, or haven’t kept pace with Microsoft’s recommendations.

How you will benefit:

Scenario 1:

You Have the Tools. You Aren’t Using Them.

Your Microsoft 365 subscription may already include security capabilities that aren’t being fully used.

For example, a firm may have access to Microsoft tools for managing identities, devices and endpoint security, but some of those capabilities were never configured.

Secure Score can help bring those opportunities to the surface.

Scenario 2:

Your Laptops Are Protected. Your Mobile Devices Aren’t.

Your employees aren’t only accessing company information from their laptops.

Phones and tablets can also connect to email, Teams, SharePoint and other company information. If those devices aren’t properly managed, that’s another area Microsoft may identify for improvement.

Scenario 3:

Anyone Can Connect From Any Computer.

A username, password and even MFA aren’t the only ways to control access.

Microsoft can also help you control which devices are allowed to connect to your firm’s environment and apply additional rules depending on how someone is trying to access it.

If those controls haven’t been configured, they may appear in your recommendations.

Scenario 4:

Your Files Are in SharePoint. But Who Can Access Them?

Moving files to SharePoint doesn’t automatically mean every file and folder has the right level of protection.

Sensitive information may need tighter controls around who can access it, how it can be shared and what users can do with it.

Your Microsoft environment includes tools for protecting that information. Secure Score can help identify areas that deserve another look.
